Why Choose Us

Serving St. Matthews Since 1983

You won’t find what Louisville Iron Works builds on a shelf at a big box store. Every handrail we make is custom measured on-site and fabricated to match the specific architecture of your home, not a stock size pulled off a rack. That matters a lot in St. Matthews, where the housing stock runs from century-old Cape Cods and Craftsman bungalows to Tudor Revivals and newer construction. No two homes call for the same rail, and we build to whatever style is actually on your porch or staircase, not the other way around.

Every step happens in house, start to finish. We measure your site ourselves, cut and weld the rail in our own shop, powder coat it for a finish that holds up, and install it, with no subcontractors, no outside vendors, and no handoffs in between. We’ve been family-owned since 1987, working out of our shop in Southern Indiana and serving homeowners throughout the Louisville area, including St. Matthews. When you call Louisville Iron Works, you’re working with the same people from measurement to installation, and that’s been true for close to 40 years.

Amazing features

The City of St. Matthews

St. Matthews got its start as a crossroads community. A small farming town along old Shelbyville Road where German, Swiss, and Irish families once grew produce that rode the rails into Louisville and beyond.

It’s still a crossroads, just a different kind. St. Matthews has managed something a lot of growing suburbs haven’t. It kept its small-town character. Walkable streets, mature trees, neighbors who know each other, while becoming one of Louisville’s busiest retail and residential hubs. Thanks to Mall St. Matthews and the Oxmoor Center.

Common Questions

Custom Handrails, Done Right

Answers to the most common questions we get from St. Matthews homeowners about custom handrails, handrail installation

The cost of a custom steel handrails depends on the total linear footage, the complexity of the stair angles, and the chosen styling.

  • Basic Safety Handrails: Typically range from $100 to $150 per linear foot for clean, minimalist, high-durability designs anchored directly into concrete or wood steps.

  • Custom Ornamental Handrails: Typically range from $150 to $250+ per linear foot for intricate decorative patterns or custom architectural metalwork.

While property owners frequently search for “wrought iron handrails,” traditional forged iron is rarely used in modern structural construction; instead, high-quality structural steel provides the modern standard for durability and strength.

Unlike old-fashioned iron, which is highly susceptible to rapid carbon oxidation and structural scaling, modern welded steel profiles feature superior lateral strength and a more uniform surface composition. When treated with an anti-rust defensive primer and an industrial powder coat, structural steel completely blocks out the moisture cycles common to the humid Kentuckiana climate, eliminating the need for regular scraping and painting.

A typical custom porch railing system takes 3 to 4 weeks to fully design, weld, and cure in our Southern Indiana shop, followed by a single-day installation at your property.

By executing all heavy fabrication, structural welding, and defensive powder coating off-site, we keep property disruption to an absolute minimum. Our mobile installation crew arrives at your St. Matthews site with the finished, fully cured product and handles all drilling and post-anchoring in less than a day—ensuring your entryways remain accessible and safe without weeks of ongoing construction mess.

We do offer repair services for old, failing handrails. However, the rails have to be able to be fixed. They can not be too dilapidated. Retrofitting structural fixes onto heavily oxidized or structurally compromised metal is possible with our sandblasting, welding and powder coating services.

When an exterior handrail begins to scale, flake, or loosen at its anchoring points, the internal integrity of the metal has generally degraded to the point of failure. Our process replaces the entire compromised areas with new steel.

Securing heavy-duty exterior step railings to concrete requires specialized structural techniques to prevent cracking.

  • Core Drilling: Rather than using aggressive wedge anchors that place intense lateral expansion pressure on brittle brick or limestone, our crews use wet diamond core drills to cut clean, stress-free vertical holes directly through the masonry.

  • Epoxy Injection Systems: We insert the structural steel posts directly into the cored cavities and seal them permanently using commercial-grade anchoring polymers or non-shrink structural grout.

  • Load Distribution: This deep-anchoring methodology ensures that the lateral leverage forces applied to the handrail are transferred straight into the solid ground base.
